Abstract

The article analyzes the experience of women in prison from a gender perspective, highlighting that feminist advances have not permeated the penitentiary system with the same intensity. It argues that prisons, in addition to reproducing inequalities present in society, amplify gender discrimination. The text proposes two main conclusions: first, the need to consider prison as an exceptional measure for women, since it is designed with a male perspective; second, to rethink the paradigm of gender separation in prisons to promote a more equitable cohabitation system, closer to living freely. It also questions whether sex separation in prisons is reasonable or if it perpetuates unequal power relations based on gender.
